Why study with us?

Our courses are built around you

Our Oil and Gas courses offer flexible modes of study, from full time or part time on campus to online distance learning. We know that many students are working whilst studying, and that’s why we offer the choice – allowing you to balance learning with a busy schedule.

In addition to tutor contact and online lectures, our distance learning students have a strong sense of community through the use of discussion forums, chat sessions and group working areas.

We have unrivalled links with the industry around you

We have been here since the North Sea oil and gas industry started more than forty years ago. Over this time, we have built up strong links with the industry and academia, from course development, to guest speakers and commercial collaboration with the industry. These partnerships ensure that all of our courses are 100% relevant.

Gain transferrable skills

Although our courses gear you up for a career in oil and gas, the skills and knowledge you gain are transferrable across a number of industries. This is future-proofing – we’re not limiting you to one sector

Study at the heart of the North Sea

What better place to study than the oil and gas capital of Europe? We’ve been here since it all started, and have all the experience, knowledge and skills to set you up for a successful and rewarding career in oil and gas, wherever you’re based.

We’ve seen the innovation, technology and people that have built the industry into one of the most ground-breaking in the world, and we’re focussed on providing students with the skills and knowledge to continue driving the industry forward.

Our employability is the highest in the UK

We are extremely proud of our graduate employment track record which is the best in Scotland. We’re one of the top UK universities for postgraduate employability, with a 98.5% employment rate – HESA Destination of UK Leavers’ survey 2013/14.

We have an institute dedicated to oil and gas with state-of-the-art facilities

The launch of RGU’s Oil and Gas Institute in 2013 is reflective of the University’s commitment to our work with this important industry. The Oil and Gas Institute was set up to provide a front door for companies looking to take advantage of our expertise in oil and gas. We have a network of partner institutions and a team of experts who can support your business needs.

We deliver thought-leadership, education, training, consultancy, research for business and exclusive facilities including our Wave Tank, Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV) testing area and Dynamic Advanced Responsive Training (DART).

DART represents a joint-venture between KCA Deutag Limited and RGU. The simulation depicts realistic graphics and sound effects to simulate what a driller would see or hear on an oil and gas platform or land rig. This immersive experience trains for real drilling situations and challenges including well-control scenarios.

The simulator gives recent graduates and well engineers the essential knowledge which underlies the development of practical capability and competence.

“There was good communication between the tutor and students, and lots to learn about the subject. Quite simply – the time I was a student as Robert Gordon University was the greatest time of my life!” Alexei Iassinski, MSc Drilling and Well Engineering
